Some of Paris’ most famous luxury hotels are closing their doors, but not forever. This summer Parisian hotels will be closing their doors for the next two years to complete renovations, which will overhaul the ornate but tired spaces in order to keep up with some of the new international luxury chains that have begun to pop up around the city. The most iconic hotel to undergo this transformation will be the Ritz Paris. The 160 room hotel on Place Vendome has been owned by Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al- Fayed since 1979 and has not been renovated since. The increasing competition from newer luxury brand hotels, such as the Mandarin Oriental and the Shangri-La, made the more established brands realize that they need to get up to date with technological advancements, such as in room WiFi. The renovations will include an extended ballroom, a new restaurant and additional suites. However, the major refurbishment will focus on an entire technological makeover.
