Welcome to the team, Cari!

Please welcome our newest employee, Cari C. to the team!

It is always nerve-racking coming into a new company and trying to break the ice. Ensuring that new employees feel comfortable is crucial to building a positive transition within a company. We thought it would be fun to ask Cari a few questions to get to know him a little better.

Q: What is your official work title?
A: Systems Support Specialist

Q: Can you tell us more about your professional experience/ history?
A: Immediately after finishing High School I began working in Webhosting Tech Support, wherein I advanced from Jr. Linux Admin, to Dedicated-Server Support, to Datacenter Ops, to midrange Linux Admin, to where I am now. I also practiced pro-bono English Instruction/Tutoring, freelance Graphic Design, and Child Care for Executives.

Q: What do you like to do outside of work?

A: Staying creative, making video games, comics, visual art. I also tend a small community garden I started (called The Hero of Thyme), and like to practice RC Aviation. I’d eventually like to obtain a Private Pilot’s license.

Q: What are your greatest travel experience?
A: I moved to Argentina to live with my boyfriend (whom I recently married).

Q: Favorite movie?
A: Howl’s Moving Castle

Q: Guilty pleasure music artist?
A: The Pillows

Q: What is something that inspires you?
A: Other peoples’ success stories and seeing the fruits of their labors. Being able to admire the superb craftsmanship of someone’s project is encouraging evidence that anyone could make something impressive if they’re dedicated to the task. It’s easy to get discouraged by your own failures, but knowing by example that it’s possible to make something work can help oneself to get back in the game.

Q: What would you say your professional goal would be now that you are employed at Percipia?
A: Making use of both my IT background and my creative drive, with tasks such as software development.

80th Annual NFL Draft

We are less than a week away from the 2015 NFL Draft. This year the event will be hosted in Chicago at Grant Park, Congress Plaza, and the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University. The NFL as well as Chicago organizers say the event will be a major production that will turn parts of downtown Chicago into professional football's second biggest event of the year.

The 900,000-square foot Draft Town, across the street from the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago's Grant Park and Congress Plaza, is a free admission "Town" for fans to come and partake in competitions, meet players, enjoy food, drink and music and buy NFL merchandise.

Although many spectators are excited for the event, Chicagoans dread for the day when street closings and transportation reroutes take over the city. The city's Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) announced a series of road closures for the Draft. Traffic around Grant Park and Roosevelt University will be diverted to make way for Draft events April 30 to May 2. OEMC officials encourage residents to allow extra time, expect delays and consider alternate routes to avoid the impact of the event.

Draft Town times and Dates:

Thursday, April 30: 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Friday, May 1: 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Saturday, May 2: 10 p.m. - 7 p.m. (concert at 8 p.m.)

Free Concert

A free concert featuring American Idol winner and platinum-selling songwriter PHILLIP PHILLIPS will provide a grand finale to the three-day Draft celebration in Chicago’s Grant Park on Saturday, May 2 at 8 p.m.

If you are attending the 80th annual NFL Draft leave a comment below or tweet us @Percipia1 and let us know how the event went.

Welcome Sahal to the Team!

Please help us welcome Sahal Ansari to our Chicago team!

It is always nerve-racking coming into a new company and trying to break the ice. Ensuring that new employees feel comfortable is crucial to building a positive transition within a company. We thought it would be fun to ask Sahal a few questions to get to know him a little better.

Let’s get started!

Q: What is your official work title?

A: My official work title is System Support Specialist.

Q: Can you tell us more about your professional experience/ history?

A: I’ve worked at lot of different jobs in the past including as a conversational English teacher in Shenzhen, China, as a Product Demonstrator at various grocery stores, and as a Social Services Assistant at a nursing home.

I spent spring semester 2012 in Beijing, China and helped a few of my friends poke holes in the Great Firewall. After I returned to the states, I built a website to help people get around censorship. I’ve been working on it since

Q: What do you like to do outside of work?

A: I love to travel, listen to music, bike, and watch tv.

Q: What are your greatest travel experience?

A: I took a road trip with my roommate a few years ago to the east coast.  We met some cool people at a New York hostel and traveled with them to other cities.

I was in Thailand during last year’s protests against the Prime Minster. We were trying to get on a domestic flight out of Bangkok on the first day of the protests. After a fun night, having only slept a few hours, we left our hostel for the airport with five hours to spare.  We waved down a few taxies until one finally agreed to get us to the airport.  Although the highway entrances were blocked by protesters we still got to the airport quickly. Unfortunately, the driver charged us triple and we sat bored at the airport for four hours while Bangkok’s citizens exercised their democratic freedoms.

The most difficult thing I’ve done physically is climb Tiger Leaping Gorge in Lijiang, Yunnan, China.  Through all the twenty-eight bends, I didn’t see one tiger…

Now on to the more personal questions.

Q: Favorite movie?

A: I really like bad Kung Fu movies with bad subtitles.

Q: Guilty pleasure music artist?

A: Rae Sremmurd

Q: What is something that inspires you?

A: I am inspired by everyone out there that tries hard to achieve their dreams.

Q: What would you say your professional goal would be now that you are employed at Percipia?

A: I want to learn a lot about supporting Percipia’s software.

Well there you have it! We are so happy to have Sahal join the team and contribute to the success of Percipia.

St. Patrick’s Day 2015

© Percipia

In the 1600s, the Catholic Church created St. Patrick’s Day to commemorate the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day has become the world’s most celebrated holiday. In Chicago it's a holiday when the Irish taverns are packed, crowds jam the city streets and the Chicago River sparkles brilliant shades of emerald green. Spectators come from all over the world to celebrate this grand Irish tradition.

15th Annual Chicago Polar Plunge

On March 1st, 2015 the 15th Annual Polar Bear Plunge will commence. Last year more than 3,000 people jumped in Lake Michigan for the Polar Bear Plunge. Participants have the option to go knee high, waist high or even take the full plunge. The event has no registration fee; however participants are required to raise a minimum of $75 on their fundraiser page. Participants will receive a link which they can send around to family and friends so that they can make secure online donations. In 2014, more than $2.1 million was raised by more than 7,300 plungers.

(Nancy Stone / Chicago Tribune)

Jimmy Fallon and Mayor Emanuel  participated in the Plunge last year. Fallon promised Emanuel that he would do the event with him and kept his word. Fallon should up in a suit, while Emanuel wear a green Chicago Public Library T-shirt and shorts.

Participants will enter the water in waves (10:30am, 11:00am, 11:30am). Costumes are encouraged. All fundraisers will receive a long sleeved t-shirt and a commemorative towel when exiting the water. All are invited to our post event "Melt Down Party" (11am-2pm) which takes place inside the boat house and in adjacent large heated tents. Music, food, cash bar and more!

LinkedIn

At Percipia we believe our staff should have up-to-date LinkedIn profiles. It not only reflects them personally but reflects the company as a whole. You can see a glimpse of work atmosphere and how a company operates, just by searching personal and company profiles.

LinkedIn is a very powerful social media tool that connects the professional world together. Users are able to network with people in their field, look into company profiles, search who’s working for that company, what tasks they are doing, and search for jobs within that field. Your company is exposed to the world. Companies do not have control of what their employees post on LinkedIn or any other social media outlet, but at Percipia we help guide everyone to structure their profiles to best represent themselves and the company. We have someone on site that is able to assist all staff with the best guidance for social networking.

Michael Velasquez, CEO, has a perfect LinkedIn profile that best represents our company. He actively posts and keeps his profile up-to-date. In the professional world, it is very important to be on top of your industries news. You must be connected with the right profiles, so you can optimize your network.

Staying on top of notifications is crucial. Social media is 24/7 that means you can get a connection request, or an inbox message at any point. Users should look into responding to those messages daily. Notifications are like emails, you should respond to them asap, because you never know what the possibility could hold for that professional.

We would love for you to connect with us on our different social media outlets.  Click on our social icons on the side of the screen or search for Percipia.

Things To Do - Chicago

As the temperature drops in Chicago one would think that the number events would drop as well. Chicago in the summertime is always a blast. With every weekend having an event you would never get bored. Chicago winters are exactly the same.

We recently read an article on TimeOut.com that shared 39 things you could do in Chicago.

Things To Do

Starting out on January 1st, the New Year’s Day 5K gave Chicagoans and visitors a chance to start out their resolutions on a high note. The race coordinators estimated nearly 1,500 runners to attend and about a third to walk. The course route travels north along the lakefront bike path to Diversey Harbor before returning to the North Avenue Field House.

Jan 8: The Original Mother's honors the 80th birthday of the late, hip-shaking crooner withs its annual Elvis Fest.

Photograph: Max Herman
Jan 11: Strip down to your skivvies and draw befuddled looks from clueless CTA riders during the annual No Pants Subway Ride. This event has no rhyme or reason, just to have a little fun. The No Pants Subway Ride is actually a multi city event, featuring in more than 50 cities around the world.

If you are in the Chicago area, here is the Facebook page of the meeting location!

WHERE: The meeting point is at the roof deck of the parking garage at 1210 W Arthur above the CVS. There is a staircase and an elevator entrance on Arthur past the CVS. We want to leave the venue as clean as we found it and there are limited trashcans at the site. please plan accordingly.

Event Info Here

Jan 16–18: The perpetually cursed Wrigley Field residents will showcase management and players at the annual Cubs Convention.

Jan 17, 18: Wanna get away? Plan your next excursion, near or far, at the Chicago Travel & Adventure Show.

----------------------

If you are attending any of these events, lets us know how they went!

Welcome to the Team!

Please help us welcome Ian Brown to our Chicago team!

It is always nerve-racking coming into a new company and trying to break the ice. Ensuring that new employees feel comfortable is crucial to building a positive transition within a company. We thought it would be fun to ask Ian a few questions to get to know him a little better.

Let’s get started!

Q: What is your official work title?

A: Systems Support Specialist

Q: Can you tell us more about your professional experience/ history?

A: I use to work for AnyMeeting as their Technical Support Specialist.

Q: What do you like to do outside of work?

A: I play music with friends, practice martial arts, cook, read, and study. I also play chess, albeit terribly.

Q: What are your greatest travel experience?

A: A jazz combo I was in was hired to play a few fancy to-dos around the country. One was in L.A., where we stayed in the famous 'riot house' hotel on Sunset Blvd, played a party inside the Director's guild (with free drinks), and had ample opportunity to enjoy the nightlife and beaches. All expenses paid, of course.

Now on to the more personal questions.

Q: Favorite movie?

A: Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo

Q: Guilty pleasure music artist?

A: Eazy-E

Q: What is something that inspires you?

A: The chaotic energy of the city. It's 2.7 million people, from the lowliest beggars to the highest paid CEOs all living together in the same place. It's the rhythm of the train, packed to the brim as it throws you around inside the car. It's walking in a pack of people on the streets, all focused on their path and each with their own destinations and goals. It all reminds me of the fast-paced and jagged rhythms of bebop. The city itself is alive!

Q: What would you say your professional goal would be now that you are employed at Percipia?

A: ? To become an IP-PBX guru, performing feats of computing wizardry scarcely dreamed of by mere mortals.

Well there you have it! We are so happy to have Ian join the team and contribute to the success of Percipia.

2014 Bank of America Chicago Marathon

This Sunday, October 12, 2014, around 45,000 participants will run the streets of Chicago in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Runners from all 50 states and more than 100 countries will set out to accomplish their personal dreams. The Chicago Marathon has been around since 1905. That first race was run on Saturday, September 23, 1905, which began in Evanston and finished in front of a standing-room-only paying crowd at Washington Park race track.

Some runners will finish the race in two hours. In order to do that, they will be running at the speeds of 12.5 mph for a constant two hours. Luckily there will be 200 students from the Chicago Cortiva Institute offing complimentary massage therapy. This will go on between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The massage tent will be located within the 27th Mile Post-Race Party (Southwest corner, adjacent to the Petrillo Band Shell).

This year's event times:
Marathon Wheelchair - 7:20 a.m.
Marathon Handcycle – 7:21 a.m.
Athletes with Disabilities – 7:22 a.m.
Wave 1 – 7:30 a.m.
Wave 2 – 8:00 a.m.

After the race and 27th Mile party, Bank of America is offering runners and guests with free admission to the Art Institute of Chicago. This will continue until October 13, if participants show runners bib, finisher’s medals or registration confirmation.

Many celebrities have participated in the marathon. Some of them do it for publicity, others for the sake of blending in and being apart of the race. Here are some celebrity marathoners, with the races they ran and their times.

Since the terrible event that happened at the Boston Marathon, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon has put together an emergency alert system to keep everyone safe. This is taken form the website itself.

"A color-coded Event Alert System (EAS) will communicate the status of course conditions to participants leading up to and on race day. The levels range from Low (green) to Moderate (yellow) to High (red) to Extreme (black) based primarily on the weather, as well as other conditions.

  • Email and website communication during race week will inform participants of the current Event Alert System status and provide preparation tips based on advance weather forecasts.
  • Updates will be made at the Abbott Health & Fitness Expo via handouts at the participant packet pick-up area and public address announcements.
  • On race day, the current Event Alert System status will be communicated via public address announcements and color-coded signs/flags at the start and finish areas, and along the course at each of the 20 aid station locations and via large digital traffic message boards.
All participants should familiarize themselves with the Event Alert System prior to the race, remain alert for directions from race officials and announcers and take precautions to prepare properly for varying weather conditions on race day."

Event Alert System table:

This year we hope for a safe and fun event. We wish all the participants good luck. If you are running or just spectating we would love to hear your story and experience.
